Come, let us explore further what this ancient Indian encyclopaedia of dramaturgy has to offer.
The most important text of dramaturgy that ancient India produced is the Nātyashāstra. The title literally means the ‘Science of Drama’ but it is far more than that; it is a comprehensive treatise or a compendium or a veritable encyclopedia of knowledge concerning Sanskrit drama and theatre. Based on internal evidence, it is generally believed that it was composed during the period of 200 B.C.E. and 400 C.E.. The authorship is attributed to the sage Bharata (Bharata Muni).
On account of the importance that the drama and theatre assumed in Indian life that the Nātyashāstra has been given the status of the fifth Ved (Pancham Ved). This course shall help the viewer to explore the evolution of this Science of Drama or Nātyashāstra.
