Indian musical traditions have diversity and pluralism as an embedded feature and that one needs to be aware of the larger musical reality. The most common and widely used definition is the one given by Pt. Sharngadeva, “Geetam Vaadyam Tatha Nrityam, Trayam Sangeetamuchyate,” meaning, music has a three aspects namely, Geetam (Vocal music), Vaadyam (Instrumental music) and Nrityam (Dance). This definition throws light on the performing aspect of the music-making that Indians conceived however how it unfolds on the conceptual plane is not completely clear. This course shall help viewers to understand Indian music better by becoming knowledgeable listeners, get acquainted with the musical concepts and appreciate a musical performance.
